Zola Mae Sand was born on Saturday, July 15, 1922, five miles east of Princeton, Kansas. She was the daughter of Clarence A. and Cornelia Rebecca (Wright) Foushee. When Zola was two and a half years old, her family moved to rural Ottawa. After her marriage, she and Ralph lived in Green, Kansas for two years, moving back to the family home place in 1947. In October of 1992, she moved into Ottawa, where she made her home until her death on Tuesday, April 19, 2011, at the age of eighty-eight years. She graduated from Rock Creek Grade School and Ottawa High School with the class of 1942, and entered St. Luke's Hospital Nursing School in 1944 as a cadet nurse, attending one and one-half years. Zola worked at the Farm Security Administration and the Franklin County Extension Office briefly before entering nurse's training. She was a homemaker and seamstress, making dresses and doing alterations. She worked out of her home for twenty-five years before working for Chibi's Dress Shop, Cloud Nine Bridal Shop, and Janie's Bridal Shop, all of Ottawa, for a total of ten years, retiring in 1992. She was a member of Union Chapel United Methodist Church, Rock Creek EHU for twenty-five years, held various offices on the Franklin County Extension Council, served as 4-H Leader in Riley County and assisted in Franklin County. On October 1, 1945, Zola was united in marriage with Ralph L. Sand in Ottawa, Kansas. He preceded her in death on June 4, 1992. She is also preceded in death by her parents; sister, Lela Webster; and three brothers, Joe Neal Foushee, Rex Foushee, Bobbie Dale Foushee. She is survived by two sons, Mike L. Sand and his wife, Linda Rae, of Pittsburg, KS, Rex P. “Pat” Sand and his wife, Linda Kay, of Clarkston, MI; brother, Max E. Foushee of Ottawa, KS; seven grandchildren, Susan Fangman and her husband, Darren; Mark Sand and his wife, Elena; Karen Sebastian; Sharon Peterson-Sand and her husband, Gabe; Kurt Sand and his wife, Donette; Regina Yopp and her husband, Aaron; Kecia Humes and her husband, Tom; and twelve great-grandchildren, Summer and Tristan Fangman; Veronica and Martin Sand; Madeline Sebastian; Frannie, Geffen and Vincent Peterson-Sand; Lincoln and Hamilton Sand; Reagan and Aaron II Yopp. SERVICES: Funeral Services will be held from the Dengel & Son Mortuary in Ottawa at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 23, 2011. Family will meet with friends prior to services. IN STATE: Mrs. Sand will lie in state from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. Friday at Dengel & Son Mortuary.
