Wylan Flory

December 8, 1940 — December 3, 2024

Pomona

Wylan Flory passed away December 3, 2024 at his home in rural Pomona, Kansas. He was born December 8, 1940 in Wabash, Indiana to Jesse Flory and Ida (Hufford) Flory and was the youngest of five brothers.

He attended school in Indiana through the 7th grade and then began working for farmers in the area. He then moved to Kansas in 1961 to start working on a dairy farm in northern Franklin County where he met Betty McKinley. The couple then exchanged vowels on October 16, 1962. Shortly thereafter, he moved away from working on the farm to hone his skills as a heavy equipment operator, working for a couple local excavation companies. He began working for Garney Construction, out of Kansas City, Missouri, in April of 1971 where he was an operator on large scale utility projects in various locations across the United States. He enjoyed his job and rarely missed a day of work. He retired in 2001.

Wylan enjoyed hunting, fishing, riding motorcycles and taking care of things around his small farm. His greatest enjoyment came from anything that he could do using one of the many classic John Deere tractors that he owned over the years. He attended many tractor pulls, threshing bees, and tractor shows throughout his life. While he never played organized sports, he loved to compete, whether it was a foot race or a occasional game of pool. He was quiet and reserved, but could be seen smiling and adding subtle jokes while enjoying family and friends. With him, everyone had a nickname. It often took some clarification to know who was being discussed because their real name was rarely mentioned.

He was perfect example of what can be accomplished through hard work and dedication to your craft. He was a great provider for his family, for which they will be forever grateful, and though he would not take credit for it, he passed these values onto his future generations. Wylan was loved and will be forever missed by those who knew him well.

Wylan is survived by his wife Betty (McKinley) Flory of their home; sons Darrell and wife Susan (Jones) Flory, Mark and wife Stephanie (Herring) Flory, Blaine and wife Amy (Hermreck) Flory; along with ten grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; along with brothers Norman and wife Myrtle Flory and Elmer and wife Virginia Flory.

A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.
