William Riley Funk, age 87, of Paola, Kansas passed away June 10, 2017 at the Olathe Hospice House. He was born on May 13, 1930 in Jerseyville, Illinois. He was adopted at an early age by Frank and Rachel Funk. His parents noticed he had a musical talent so they hired a woman to teach Bill vocal music and later the violin. These early teachings groomed him for a musical career as a young adult. He could play any type of instrument and started working for Sam Humes Music store in Paola and soon became the owner from 1967 to 1995. Bill also obtained ownership of a store in Olathe. He was a piano tuner and master violinist, and rented and sold instruments to schools all over the area. He was instrumental in playing a part in the musical education of thousands of students. Bill was united in marriage to Ann Thorlakson on May 28, 1951 and celebrated their 66th anniversary last May. Bill was always very busy raising his family. He was active in Rotary; and the First Presbyterian Church as elder, Sunday school teacher, choir, and on the building and maintenance board. He was also on the PACCA board, Miami County Mental Health Center Board, Paola City Council, and received the Paola Spirit Award for all his efforts from the Paola Chamber of Commerce. His hobbies were fishing, traveling and enjoying nature. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Frank and Rachel Funk, his son Roger, and his sister Bonnie. He is survived by his wife Ann of the home; children Kathy Funk, Loren Funk (Janette), and Larry Funk; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
