Wilbur Ray Harkins was born June 1, 1952, at Ottawa, in Franklin County, Kansas. He was the son of Dennis M. and Harriet Ilo (Carter) Harkins. He grew up in the Lane area. From 1964 to 1986, he lived in the Emporia area, moving to Wichita in 1986, where he made his home until his death Saturday, June 1, 2002, at the age of fifty years. Wilbur graduated from Emporia High School with the class of 1970. For the past 15 years, he was employed as an engine installer for Midwest Engine Exchange in Wichita. He was formerly a truck driver and mechanic. Wilbur was an excellent mechanic and really enjoyed working on cars. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family and visiting with his friends. In April of 1980, Wilbur was united in marriage with Sharyl Scheck at Emporia. They were later divorced. Wilbur is survived by his mother, Harriet Ilo Harkins of Goddard, Kansas; son, David Joe Harkins of Emporia, Kansas; daughter, Angie Matthews of Topeka, Kansas; two stepsons, Adam Chestnut of Emporia, Kansas, Klenton Chestnut of Melvern, Kansas; stepdaughter, Mellissa Metcalfe of Wilsey, Kansas; sister, Dixie L. Zahrowski of Gillette, Wyoming; seven brothers, Dennis D. Harkins of Ottawa, Kansas, Roger E. Harkins of Osage City, Kansas, Valerian E. Harkins of Oroville, California, Henry D. Harkins of Garden Plain, Kansas, Phillip L. Harkins of Longview, Texas, Dr. Davy J. Harkins of Eldorado, Kansas, Victor L. Harkins of Wichita, Kansas; three grandchildren; and, six stepgrandchildren. He is preceded in death by his father, Dennis M. Harkins, and stepson, Scott Chestnut. SERVICES: Graveside services will be held at Princeton Cemetery 2:00 Wednesday, June 5, 2002. OFFICIATING CLERGY: Fr. Emil Agostino IN STATE: Mr. Harkins will lie in state at the Dengel & Son Mortuary after 9:00 a.m. Wednesday to the service hour, where a Rosary will be said at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday followed by family visitation at Dengel & Son Mortuary. CEMETERY: Princeton Cemetery, Princeton, Kansas.
