Wilber Jean Burgoon

June 3, 1929 — July 14, 2007

Jean Burgoon was born on Monday, June 3, 1929, in Princeton, Kansas. He was the son of Joseph and Lacey Jane (Sutton) Burgoon. A lifelong resident of Franklin County, Kansas, Jean made his home in Ottawa until his death on Saturday, July 14, 2007, at the age of seventy-eight years. He earned his GED and, later, his Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Engineering. Jean worked for the City of Ottawa as Superintendent of the Waste Water Treatment Plant twenty-five years, retiring June 18, 1993. Jean served as a Sgt. in the United States Army from January of 1951 through January of 1956, serving in the Korean War. He was a member of Ottawa Church of the Nazarene. Jean was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He greatly enjoyed spending time with his family and appreciated his many friendships. In his spare time, he enjoyed reading. On September 2, 1956, Jean was united in marriage with Beverly Jean Snethen in Ottawa, Kansas. She preceded him in death on November 25, 1999. He is also preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Joe Burgoon, Oren Burgoon; and three sisters, May Bell, Delma Peterson, and Mertal Burgoon. Jean is survived by four daughters, Pam Mayfield of Ottawa, Kansas, Lola Burgoon of Ottawa, Kansas, Priscilla Wolf and her husband, William, of Emporia, Kansas, Paula Slemp and her husband, Dale, of Ottawa, Kansas; son, William Burgoon and his wife, Amber, of Wellsville, Kansas; brother, Ray Burgoon of Florida; twenty grandchildren; and twenty-one great-grandchildren. SERVICES: Funeral services will be held from the Dengel & Son Mortuary at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 19, 2007. IN STATE: Friends may pay their respects to Mr. Burgoon at the Dengel & Son Mortuary after 5:00 p.m. Tuesday to the service hour, where the family will meet with friends 7 to 8:00 Wednesday evening. CEMETERY: Highland Cemetery, Ottawa, Kansas. MEMORIALS: The family suggests memorials to Jean Burgoon Memorial Fund, c/o Dengel & Son
