W. George Toumberlin

William George Toumberlin was born on Monday, October 17, 1927, in Paola, Kansas, the son of Charles Franklin and Elva Alice (Doudna) Toumberlin. A lifelong Kansas resident, George lived in Paola, Wellsville, Ottawa, and Princeton, until his death on Friday, October 15, 2010, at the age of eighty-two years. George attended Evergreen School and left there in the 8th grade, following his dad’s death, to work in the oil fields to help support his family. He worked in the oil fields until entering the United States Army, serving from February of 1946 to November of 1947, and receiving the World War II Victory Medal and Army Occupation Medal, Japan. Following his honorable discharge, he worked on the Hungry Horse Dam and a science building at K.U.; for Ashmore Pontiac; Penny’s Ready Mix; owned Toumberlin Trucking and Bent Fender Body Shop; and enjoyed farming. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post #5901, Ottawa; Aerie Lodge #2700, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Ottawa; Ottawa Bowling Association; and Osawatomie Chapter of the Kansas Old Time Fiddlers, Pickers and Singers. He loved music, listening to music, playing music, and singing and was a fantastic dancer. On Tuesday, September 21, 1948, George was united in marriage with Dorothy Arlene Brown in Ottawa, Kansas. She preceded him in death on July 11, 1995. He is also preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Charles, Daniel, Delbert, Joe, Kenneth; two sisters, Lucille Hopkins, Mary LeValley; and two grandsons, Joshua Toumberlin, Michael Thompson. He is survived by two daughters, Connie Sleichter and her husband, Keith, of Princeton, Suzanne Thompson and her husband, Daniel, of Princeton; son, George Allen Toumberlin and his wife, Phylis, of Osawatomie; brother, John Toumberlin of Weimar, TX; sister, Betty Robertson of Ottawa; grandchildren, Jeanette Reitmeyer and husband, Frank, Jessica Williams and fiancé, Frank, Jodi Jamison and husband, Rob, Kayla Scheckel and husband, Mike, Mandy Nickel and husband, Joey, Allen Toumberlin and wife, Nikki, Scott Toumberlin, Wynndee Kinder, Jeff Owens and wife, Olia, Frank Owens and fiancé, Jessica, Bruce Lane, Jr. and wife, Teresa, Michelle Fesenmeyer and husband, Scott, Kathryn Snover and husband, Dustin, Linda Marshall and husband, Eric, Toni Hartpence and husband, Ronnie, Kimberly Thompson; 46 great grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; and longtime lady friend, Reva Turner, of Ottawa. SERVICES: Memorial Services will be held from the Dengel & Son Mortuary in Ottawa at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 21, 2010. IN STATE: The family will meet with friends at Dengel & Son Mortuary from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 20, 2010. CEMETERY: Inurnment will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Williamsburg, Kansas, with Military Honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post #5901.
