Virginia Manchester

Ella "Virginia? Manchester, age 93, died Sunday, July 27th, 2008 at the Country Club Estates, Paola, Kansas. Born on a farm in Miami County, February 26, 1915, she was the daughter of Robert Matthews and Lulu Ella Wilds Matthews. Virginia was raised by her Grandfather Robert Matthews and Aunt Adelene Matthews. Virginia attended high school at Ursuline Academy. She lived at the Ursuline during the week and went home on the weekends. While at school she played the harp. She attended Ottawa University for 2 years. Virginia married George Junior Manchester on November 18, 1935. Virginia was 20 years old and George Junior was 26 at the time of their marriage. They started out farming during the depression. For wedding gifts one side of the family gave chickens and the other side gave a cow, so they had milk and eggs. After the first year of farming in Kansas, they moved to Meridan, Idaho and farmed in the Boise Valley. While in Idaho 2 daughters were born, Sharon Arlene Manchester (1938) and Linda Sue Manchester (1944). They returned to Kansas in 1946 to help George Jr."s aging father with the farm and carpentry. Virginia was a homemaker and raised her children. She then took a job in the dietary department at the Osawatomie State Hospital until she retired to care for her Aunt Addie Matthews. Virginia was a member of the Presbyterian Women"s Association, the Wagstaff Social Club, and the Homemaker"s Extension Unit. She enjoyed traveling, ceramics, reading, entertaining and scrapbooking. She had a love for the outdoors and eating ice cream. Virginia and George were happily married for 70 years and celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary before George died, January 9, 2006. She is survived by her two daughters Sharon and husband Robert Scherman and Linda and husband Fred Koup, 7 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Preceding her in death are her husband, one brother, Emery, one grandson John Marion Scherman.
