Violet Opal King

Violet Opal King, 98, of Pomona, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, January 3, 2023, at Rock Creek of Ottawa.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Monday, January 9, 2023, at Appanoose Baptist Church, Smith Fellowship Hall, Pomona, Kansas.

Family will meet with friends from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M., Sunday, January 8, 2023, at Dengel & Son Mortuary.

Interment Dean Cemetery, Pomona, Kansas.

Violet was born March 23, 1924, at Pomona, Kansas, the daughter of Rufus A. and Ethel A. (Morgan) McEathron.

She was a lifelong Franklin County resident. She spent most of her life living in the Appanoose community. Violet enjoyed sharing her knowledge of local and family history with anyone.

Violet graduated from Appanoose High School with the class of 1942.

She was united in marriage with Oscar “Gene” King June 17, 1956, at Scott City, Kansas. He survives of the home.

Violet was a seamstress with H. D. Lee from the late 1940’s to 1960. In the late 1970’s and 80’s she sewed drapes for Quinn’s Home Furnishings.

She was a member of the Appanoose Baptist Church where she served playing the piano until age 95. Other memberships include Extension Homemakers Unit, Appanoose Baptist Women and the V.F.W. Post 5901 Auxiliary. Violet enjoyed all the activities of being a homemaker and farm wife. She loved cooking, sewing, quilting, and gardening. In her leisure time she enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, genealogy and family history. Violet especially enjoyed spending time with family.

Violet was preceded in death by her parents, an infant brother, Everett McEathron and sister, Irene McEathron.

Survivors include her husband Oscar, children, Betty Nordeng (Steve) of Grand Forks, North Dakota, Bonnie Nitcher (Lee), Barbara Engel (Jerry) both of Pomona, Brenda Coffman of Overland Park, Kansas; grandchildren, Stephan Nordeng (Kellie), Ian Nordeng (Katlin), Stephanie Anderson (Caleb), Kyle Nitcher, Matthew Engel, Lauren Engel (Jeffery), David Coffman (Bree) and Ashley Powell (Travis) and fourteen great grandchildren.

MEMORIALS: The family suggests memorial contributions to the Appanoose Baptist Church c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa, Kansas 66067.
