Violet Fern Johnson

Fern Johnson, 95, of Williamsburg, Kansas died on Friday, April 3, 2009 at Village Manor Nursing Home in Ottawa, Kansas. She was born on Monday, February 16, 1914, in Wallace County, Kansas, the daughter of Ira Thompson and Mabel (Burruss) Thompson. RESIDENCE HISTORY: Fern moved from Wallace County in 1926 to the area south of Pomona, and in 1932 moved to Williamsburg. EDUCATION: Fern attended school in North Illinois grade school. OCCUPATION & BUSINESS: Fern helped on the family farm and worked fifteen years in the Williamsburg School kitchen from 1954 until 1969. MEMBERSHIPS: She was a member of the Williamsburg United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Bible Study Group, the church choir, and coordinated their Golden Age dinners. She was also a 4-H leader, a Blood Mobile volunteer and a member of Friendly Neighbors Extension Homemaker Unit. In 2003 Fern received the Outstanding Service Award for contributions to the Williamsburg community, signed by Governor Sebelius. MARRIAGE: On October 22, 1932, Fern was united in marriage with Herbert L. Johnson at Emporia, Kansas. He preceded her in death on August 7, 1999. SERVICES: Funeral services will be held at the Williamsburg United Methodist Church, 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 8, 2009. IN STATE: Mrs. Johnson will lie in state at the Dengel & Son Mortuary after 9 a.m. Tuesday to the service hour where the family will meet with friends from 7 to 8 Tuesday evening.
