A funeral mass for Veronica V. Mages, 96, of Arvada, Colorado, formerly of Ottawa, Kansas who died Wednesday April 7, 2004 at the Arvada Health Care Center, Arvada will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday April 14, 2004 at the Shrine of St. Anne in Arvada with Father David Croak officiating. Graveside services and burial will occur at 10 a.m. on Friday April 16, 2004 at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Ottawa with Father Tod Ziegler officiating. She was born on June 5, 1907 to William B. and Margaret A. (Heslop) Hay at Frontenac, Kansas. She graduated from Frontenac High School and attended State Teachers College at Pittsburg. She moved to Ottawa in 1928 where she worked for the Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. On September 16, 1931 she married Alfonso A. `Al` Mages at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ottawa. She also worked with Al at the Peterson & Mages Studebaker Sales and Service until Al entered the U.S. Army in July of 1942. She worked for the telephone company in San Francisco, California for a short period after Al was inducted. She then followed Al to Texas and Pennsylvania before Al`s departure to Europe. Returning home she was stayed active in the Army Mothers. She spent the years after the World War II raising her family and actively participating in many organizations. She was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and School including serving as PTA President. She was also a member of the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women and served as Youth Committee Chairman. After moving to Colorado she became a member of the Shrine of St. Anne parish. Veronica enjoyed her membership in the OK Extension Homemakers Unit with her many close friends. Other activities included the Franklin County Fair, the Franklin County Extension Council and Silver Leaf and Town and Country 4-H Clubs. Veronica supported scouting and served as a Cub Scout Den Mother and Girl Scout Leader. She and Al were members of the Franklin County Historical Society and served as hosts for the Old Depot Museum. She was an active member of the Franklin County Democrats serving as treasurer and secretary. Veronica served as State President of the Kansas Women`s Woodrow Wilson Club. Veronica enjoyed being active and working with her family and friends. She and Al spent many enjoyable hours playing cards and square dancing. They strongly supported the education of their children and their graduation from the University of Kansas. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and her sister Eva Fields. She is survived by a son, Al Mages, Durango, Colorado; a daughter, Carolyn Sue Golden, Arvada, Colorado; grandchildren Michael, Mark, Matthew and Julie Mages and Peter and Mark Golden and Jeanne (Golden) Hohnstein and great grandchildren Emily and Camille Arnold Mages. A rosary service will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday April 13, 2004 followed by family and friends visitation at the Archdiocese of Denver Mortuary in Wheat Ridge, Colo. Friends may also call at Dengel & Son Mortuary between 8:45 to 9:45 a.m. on Friday April 16, 2004 prior to the graveside service.
