Vernice Savage, 93, of Colby, Kansas, passed away Monday, August 18, 2014, at Fairview Estates Retirement Community. Graveside services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Friday, August 22, 2014, at Highland Cemetery, Ottawa, Kansas. Vernice was born Monday, September 20, 1920, in Oil Trough, Arkansas, the daughter of Dewey Hobart and Thelma Hazel (Massey) Allen. Vernice lived the majority of her life in rural Ottawa, Kansas, until moving to Atwood, Kansas in 2008. She graduated from Desha High School, Desha, Arkansas, with the class of 1938. Vernice was united in marriage with Russell George Savage, Jr. March 23, 1945, in Ottawa. He preceded her in death January 26, 1996. She was also preceded in death by her parents; and siblings, Dean Allen, Louise York, Dickie Allen, and Nell Kaudle. Survivors include her two children, Russell Scott and wife Ginny of Rome, Georgia, and Sherry Chapman and husband Matthew of Atwood, Kansas; four grandchildren, Richard Scott Savage and wife Lacey of Canton, Georgia, Kristen (Savage) Hunter of Rome, Georgia, Amy Goodloe and companion Tony Hubbard of Austin, Texas, and Garry Goodloe, Jr. and wife Rebecca of Ottawa; step-grandchildren, Nick Chapman of Atwood, and James Chapman of Melbourne, Florida; great grandchildren, Gregory Hunter of Rome, Georgia, and Chloe, Lillie and Emma Kate Goodloe of Ottawa; brother, Tom Allen and wife Mary Lee of Batesville, Arkansas; and sisters, Judy Lewis and husband Dicky also of Batesville, Doris Ballard of Erie, Kansas, and Ava Brightwell and husband Bobby of Springhill, Kansas. Vernice was a devoted homemaker the majority of her life. During World War II she worked as a supervisor for the North American Bomber Plant and later for Simmons Mattress. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church; United Methodist Women; and Highland Avenue Community Club, all in Ottawa.
