Vera Louise (Shafer) McCormick, age 88, of Louisburg, Kansas, passed peacefully from this world on December 10, 2024, with family by her side.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 am to 11:30 am, Friday, December 13, 2024, at Dengel & Son Mortuary – Louisburg Chapel 1 Aquatic Drive, Louisburg, Kansas 66053. Funeral service to follow at 11:30 am. Burial will be held at the Louisburg Cemetery following the funeral.
Vera was born on October 5, 1936, the youngest of nine children to Chester Waldo Shafer and Mary Elizabeth (Hines) Shafer in Linn County, Kansas. Growing up in rural Kansas, Vera graduated from Fulton High School in 1954. While in high school, she was a cheerleader for four years, played basketball, and was a member of the band, playing the baritone and drums. On September 5, 1954, Vera married her high school sweetheart and love of her life, Rex Dale McCormick. The couple was happily married for many years, and just recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.
Vera held a variety of positions throughout her career, demonstrating a strong work ethic and dedication. In addition to her professional achievements, she devoted much of her time to volunteering, making a positive impact in her community.
Vera was strong in her Christian faith and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Louisburg. She enjoyed fishing and painting in her spare time. In her retirement, Vera and Rex enjoyed traveling and going out to eat at different restaurants.
She was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters, Jane Cummins, Alice Harkness, Ina Kite, and Betty Messer, and four brothers, Allen Shafer, Keith Shafer, Clarence Shafer, and Chester Shafer.
She leaves behind countless friends and loved ones, husband of 70 years, Rex McCormick, daughter Debbie Apple and husband Pat, daughter Patricia Goode, and son Michael McCormick and wife Jill, eight grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Vera was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She will be deeply missed.
