Velma L. Coate

Velma Ludean (Koenke) Coate, 79 of Paola, Kansas, formerly of Newkirk,Oklahoma went to be with the Lord Saturday, August 28, 2010. Visitation will be 9:30am -11:00am Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at First Lutheran Church. Funeral Services will be immediately following at 11:00 am. Pastor Calvin Reinke will officiate. Visitation is scheduled in Newkirk, Oklahoma for 9:30am-11: 00 am Wednesday, September 1, 2010 at St. John"s Lutheran Church with funeral to follow. Interment will immediately follow at Newkirk Cemetery. Pastor Ramsey will officiate. Serving as pallbearers will be Billy Meisenzahl, Jimmy England, Brad Page, Riley Redenbaugh, John Malone and Pat Findley. Dusty Ewan will be an honorary pallbearer. Velma was born February 27, 1931 in Newkirk, the daughter of Otto & Mathilda (Paben) Koenke. She was raised in Newkirk and graduated from Newkirk High School in 1949. She met Roy Coate and they were married November 18, 1955 in Newkirk. Together they had two daughters, Donetta Saville of Olathe, Kansas and Pamela Ewan of Paola, Kansas. She worked for the telephone company, Sears and the Benton County Missouri Courthouse for a number of years before finally retiring in 1992. Her hobbies included spending time with her children, grandchildren and friends, painting, crafts and cooking. Velma was a member of First Lutheran Church in Paola, Kansas. She was also a member of the Lutheran Women"s Mission League and the Mary Martha Circle. Survivors include her two daughters and son-in-laws, Donetta and Arlin Saville of Olathe, KS, Pam and Tom Ewan of Paola, KS; one step-daughter, Helen Wammock of Central Point, Oregon; four grandchildren, Tabitha, Heather, Erin three great-grandchildren, Cameron, Reece and a host of relatives in the Newkirk area. She was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Roy, her parents, and one brother, Cleo. Condolences and messages may be left for the family at www.penwellgabelpaola.com.
