Una Fern Prothe Deering

Una Fern Prothe Deering, age 77, of Osawatomie, KS, passed away on April 3, 2013 at her home. She was born on the Prothe homestead at Block Community, Paola, KS, on August 25, 1935, the daughter of Paul August Theodore Prothe and Irene Malinda Minden Prothe. She was confirmed on May 22, 1949, at Trinity Lutheran Church. Una attended school at Trinity Lutheran School and then attended high school at Paola, KS, and graduated in 1953. She was married to Edward Frank Deering on March 7, 1965, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Paola, KS. While in grade school, Una rode a horse to school. After graduating from high school, she went to work for Hallmark, Kansas City, MO. Her mother had to sign a letter that she would not attend college as terms of employment. She met Ed and became the mother of his three children. She stayed home and cared for the family until she went to work at the Osawatomie State Hospital on September 13, 1976. She retired from there on March 9, 1996. After Ed"s death, she continued managing the family rental property business. Una was involved in Cadmus Grange #350. She reached the 7th degree, the highest degree in the nation. She also held on office position of Flora. She was treasurer of the Trinity Lutheran Ladies Aide and still held that position. She drove to Kansas City once a month to put books together for the Blind. She was active in the Kansas Walk for Life. She usually had breakfast with her buddies every morning. She was a member of the Red Hat Society. She liked to travel, visit with family and especially enjoyed the girls" softball games. Una is survived by her three children Mark Edward Deering and his wife Diana, of Osawatomie, KS, Paul Mathew Deering of Osawatomie, KS, and Julie Ann Deering Kellogg of Billings, MO; her brother Leland Prothe and his wife Slina of Paola, KS; sister-in-law Linda Hadsall Prothe of Paola, KS; nine grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Edward, her parents, and her brother Richard Prothe. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Lutheran Ladies Aide and the Kansas Walk of Life.
