Thomas L. “Tom” Markus, 77, of Jasper, Missouri, passed away Thursday, May 27, 2021, at Cox Barton County Hospital, Lamar, Missouri. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, June 2, 2021, at Highland Cemetery, Ottawa. Military honors by the Paola American Legion Post 156 with American Legion Riders. Family will meet with friends from 5:30 P.M. to 7:30 P.M., Tuesday, June 1, 2021, at Dengel & Son Mortuary, Ottawa. Tom was born January 5, 1944, in Kansas City, Kansas, the son of Archie and Mary (Brown) Markus. He lived in Ottawa, Kansas since 1972, moving to Jasper, Missouri where he lived the last year. Tom served in the United States Navy for three years, in the early 1960’s, where he was stationed in Hawaii and San Diego, California. Tom was united in marriage to Barbara Gilmore May 1, 1972, in Ottawa. She preceded him in death on February 10, 2017. He was a truck driver for many years working for various companies and drove many kinds of trucks. Tom loved his family and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He liked working on cars and riding motorcycles. He was also preceded in death by his three sons, Brad Wheat, Kevin Wheat, and Tony Markus: and his sister Barbara Anderson. Survivors include four children, Tom L. Markus, Jr. (Jamma) of Paola, Billy Markus of Topeka, Dustin Markus of Jasper, and Andrea Layng (Myron) of Garnett; many grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. The family suggests memorial contributions to Paola American Legion Riders Post 156 c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa, Kansas 66067.
