Terry Ann Fickel, 83, native of Paola, Kansas, died March 28, 2012 at the Richmond Nursing Home and Rehabilitative Center, Richmond, Kansas. Terry was born June 28, 1928 at Paola, Kansas. She was the daughter of Terry Amos and Elsie (Warren) Waugh. Terry graduated from Paola High School with the Class of 1946. After graduating from high school, she worked as a secretary for Judge Barkis at the Miami County Courthouse. She then worked for the Miami County Extension Office as a soil tester. She was united in marriage to Herb Fickel on December 15, 1946 at the First Presbyterian Church in Paola. They made their home in Paola and became the parents of four sons. Terry worked for the State of Kansas for 27 years. She worked for the Kansas Department of Transportation for 15 years and then transferred to the Osawatomie State Hospital for 12 years where she worked as secretary to the head of the nursing department. She retired from Osawatomie State Hospital in 1991. Terry and Herb celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this past December. Terry"s hobbies included knitting, quilting, and cross stitching. She also enjoyed jigsaw puzzles. Her cooking abilities were enjoyed by many. She and Herb enjoyed traveling. They wintered two years in their fifth wheel at Rockport/Fulton, Texas which is near Corpus Christie. She was a member of the Paola United Methodist Church where she was past president of the United Methodist Women and had also served as treasurer for the church. While her boys were in Cub Scouts, Terry was a den mother. She was the alumni secretary for Paola High School for several years. She had also been a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Terry was a charter member of the Shamrock Study Club. She was preceded in death by her parents, one son David Fickel, one sister Vera, and one brother Dale Waugh. She is survived by her husband Herb; three sons James Terry Fickel of Olathe, John Herbert Fickel and his wife Elizabeth of Lawrence, and Dale Robert Fickel of Olathe; three sisters June Everhart of Paola, Esther Ward of Prior, Oklahoma, and Lois Cole of Lamont, Missouri; one brother-in-law Robert Fickel of Kansas City, Missouri; three grandchildren Daryck Fickel and his wife Traci, Janie Bush, and Kasey Fickel; and one great granddaughter Madison Bush. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Terry Fickel Memorial Fund.
