Sylvester L. “Sy” Hess, 81, of Olathe, KS, passed away Monday, January 17, 2022, at AdventHealth Shawnee Mission. Family will meet with friends from 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M., Sunday, January 23, 2022, at Dengel & Son Mortuary, Ottawa Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Monday, January 24, 2022, at the mortuary with Masonic and Shrine Red Fez ceremony. Private Interment Highland Cemetery, Ottawa. Sy was born October 31, 1940, at Williamsburg, KS, the son of Alonzo and Katie (Morey) Hess. He lived in Overland Park, KS from 1966 to 1998, Paola, KS from 1998 to 2018, moving to Olathe, KS where he has lived for the last three years. He graduated from Appanoose High School with the Class of 1959 and attended Emporia State Teachers College. On January 25, 1963, Sy was united in marriage to Mary Ann Hornecker at Ottawa, KS. Sy was employed with the Ottawa Police Department from 1963 to 1966. For over 40 years he was a truck driver; six years for Navajo Trucking and thirty-five years at Roadway Trucking in Kansas City, KS, retiring in 1999. He was a member of the Abdallah Shrine Temple of Overland Park, KS; co-founder of Blue Racer Shrine Unit; member and Former Master in 2005 of Spring Hill Masonic Lodge No. 56 A.F. & A.M.; Scottish Rite; York Rite; Louisburg Shrine Club; Kansas Shrine Bowl – Football Committee; driver for the Shriners Children Hospital; and the Jayhawk Trail Blazers Masonic Camping Club. Sy always loved spending time with his family and never missed attending the grandchildren’s events. He also enjoyed Pheasant and Quail hunting. He was preceded in death by his parents and five siblings, Millie Brown, Ted Hess, Edwin Hess, Theda Darnell and Max Hess. Survivors include his wife Mary Ann Hess of the home; foster mom Joyce Wasmund of Ottawa; three children, Sherrie Hess of Spring Hill, KS, Sandra “Kay” Godwin (Greg) of Stillwell, KS, and Susanna Catron of Olathe, KS; sister Yuvonne Stone of Mission, TX; six grandchildren, Payton Vail (Cody), Haley Catron, Taylor Godwin, Sierra Hess, Brady Catron, and Jacob Catron; great granddaughter Lettie Vail; and several nieces and nephews. The family suggests memorial contributions to Shriners Hospitals for Children c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa, Kansas 66067.
