Shirley Mae McQuay, age 80, of Osawatomie, Kansas, died December 13, 2017 at Life Care Center of Osawatomie. Shirley was born December 27, 1936 at Osawatomie, Kansas. She was the daughter of James Orville and Dorothy O. (VanHorn) Goldsmith. She grew up in Osawatomie and attended the Osawatomie schools. She was united in marriage to William G. McQuay on November 20, 1954 at Van Nuys, California. They became the parents of five children. They returned to Osawatomie and made their home there in 1971. Their marriage ended in divorce. Shirley worked at the Osawatomie State Hospital as a dietary supervisor. Her employment there began in November of 1979. She retired in December of 1999. Shirley was an excellent seamstress and a great cook. She loved the time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a member of the Foster Grandparent Program in the Osawatomie School District and the Frontier Twirlers. Her church membership was with the First United Methodist Church in Osawatomie. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers Richard and Jim Goldsmith, one sister Dorothy Lucas, and one grandson Joshua Stickney. She is survived by her children and their spouses Bill and Bri McQuay of Paola, Ralph McQuay of Osawatomie, Brian and Debbie McQuay of LaCygne, Brenda Kuder and Terry Wolford of Ottawa, and Bridget and Kevin Chapman of Peculiar, Missouri; 8 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; many other relatives and friends. Contributions in memory of Shirley can be made to the Foster Grandparent Program or American Cancer Society and sent in care of Dengel & Son Mortuary, 605 O'Neal Ave., Osawatomie, KS, 66064.
