Shirley Jean Brooks, 69, Ottawa, died Tuesday, May 2, 2006, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. She was born Aug. 12, 1936, to Troy and Fleeta (Bones) Brooks in Princeton. She graduated from Princeton High School in 1954. She was a life-long Franklin County resident and lived in Ottawa many years. She was a cook for the Franklin County Sheriff's Department since 1992 and prior to that, a cook and waitress at L & L Cafe, Ottawa, for 30 years. She was a member of the First Christian Church, the VFW Memorial Post 5901 Ladies Auxiliary and the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Ottawa; and she was a frequent community volunteer. Survivors include seven nieces, Sue Vetterling, Denver, Linda Sime, Evansville, Wisc., Marcia Wintters, Dallas, Susan Hathaway, Phoenix, Karen Schmoe, Edgerton, Julie Brooks, Olathe, and Tammie Brooks, Fort Smith, Ark.; and four nephews, Gordon Brooks, Edgerton, Dennis Brooks, Tyler, Texas, Earl Ray Brooks and Ronnie Gene Brooks, both of Fort Smith, Ark.. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by five sisters, Opal Rothrock, Olene Sands, Lois Brooks, Mary Beth Brooks and Ruth Dushuanack; and three brothers, Cloyd E. Brooks, Raymond Brooks and Roy Brooks. Cremation is planned. Burial will be at Princeton Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Franklin County Sheriff's Reserves or the First Christian Church in care of Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory St., Ottawa KS 66067. SERVICES: Memorial services will be held from the First Christian Church of Ottawa, 2:00 p.m. Monday, May 8, 2006. IN STATE: Cremation is planned. CEMETERY: Princeton Cemetery.
