Sarah Sue Schirmer

Sarah Brockway Schirmer was born September 2, 1949, at Olathe, Kansas. She was the daughter of Dr. S. Martin and Johnnie May (Mann) Brockway. From 1973 to 1989, Sarah lived in Berryton, Kansas, moving to Topeka, Kansas in 1989. In 1998, she moved to Ottawa, in Franklin County, Kansas, where she made her home until her death Saturday, December 21, 2002, at the age of fifty-three years. Sarah graduated from Ottawa High School with the class of 1967. In 1971, she graduated from Emporia State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education. She was a lifelong homemaker. From 1990 to 1998, she taught the Multiple Needs Class at Topeka High School. From 1998 to present, she was a chiropractic assistant for Dr. John Brockway, Ottawa. Also, since the early 1980's to present, Sarah owned Pappy's Plastics in Ottawa, making badges, and, since 1991, owned and operated a square dance clothing shop in Topeka, with the help of a friend, Elmer Hutton. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church of Ottawa and several square dance clubs in Topeka. Sarah was an outgoing, caring person who enjoyed people and always had a smile. She loved her family, adored each one of her grandchildren, and appreciated her many friends. Sarah was a very special lady. On August 21, 1970, Sarah was united in marriage with Dana Schirmer. They later divorced. Sarah is survived by her mother, Johnnie Brockway of Ottawa; two daughters, Julie Schirmer of Carbondale, Renea Elliott of Ottawa; two brothers, Dr. John Brockway of Ottawa, James Brockway of Ames, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Tanner, Brandy, Dustin, Shelby, Virgil Wade, Myranda, Jodi; and, special friend, Elmer Hutton of Topeka. She is preceded in death by her father, Dr. S. Martin Brockway, and, sister, Kathryn Brockway. SERVICES: Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 30, 2002, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Ottawa. Inurnment services will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 31, 2002, at Memorial Park, Topeka. OFFICIATING CLERGY: Rev. Kent Mathews. IN STATE: Mrs. Schirmer has been cremated.
