S. James “Jim” Hartshorn, 86, of Wichita, formerly of Ottawa, passed away Friday, May 4, 2018. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, May 9, 2018, at Dengel & Son Mortuary in Ottawa Family will meet with friends from 6:30 P.M. to 7:30 P.M., Tuesday, May 8, 2018, at the mortuary. Interment Highland Cemetery, Ottawa. Jim was born September 4, 1931, in Missouri, to Elizabeth Hartshorn, raised by Mam and Dod Hartshorn. He was a longtime Ottawa resident until moving in 1959 to Wichita, where he made his home until his death. He graduated from Ottawa High School, class of 1949, and continued his education at Ottawa University receiving a Bachelor of Science in Education. Jim completed his master’s degree in Spanish at the University of Kansas in 1959. Jim served in the United States Army Reserve. Jim was united in marriage to Helen Marie Olson June 28, 1953, in Garnett, Kansas - she was the “catch of his life.” She survives of the home. Other survivors include their daughter, Debbie Phillips of Augusta; sister, Brenda Beshears and husband Jim of Missouri; six grandchildren, Michael Hartshorn and wife Melissa, Rachel Hartshorn, Cody Phillips and wife Abby, Casey Phillips and wife Miranda, Courtney and Carley Phillips; and nine great-grandchildren, Jordon, Jaydon, Sofia, baby boy Hartshorn, Peyton, Aaron, Aaliyah, Preslee and Clutch. He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Michael James Hartshorn. Jim was a dedicated teacher from 1959 to 1996, specializing in Spanish (36 years) and French (2 years) at Derby Senior High. He took his students on cultural trips to Mexico. He was an avid fisherman, enjoyed bowling in a league for 50 years, as well as bowling with his grandchildren, and loved watching KU basketball, football and Jeopardy at 4:00 pm.
