Ruth Arline Carey, age 78, of Ottawa, Kansas, died Saturday, January 28, 2012. She was the youngest of nine siblings and a Christmas blessing to her parents, Raymond Edward and Agatha Eva (Schulte) Turner, as she was born on Monday, December 25th, 1933, in Homewood, Kansas. She was a lifelong Franklin County, Kansas resident. Ruth moved with her husband from Ottawa to their farm in the Williamsburg area in 2002, returning to Ottawa following her husband’s death. Ruth graduated from Williamsburg High School with the class of 1951. Following high school, she moved to Kansas City to work two years for Royal Typewriter. She was a homemaker and raised five children. From the 1970’s to 2005, she and her husband owned and operated the family business, Carey Plumbing, Inc., where she was also secretary and treasurer. Ruth was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Ottawa, where she helped with Bible study classes. She was a guiding light and quiet servant in the community, active with many groups and a selfless volunteer for charitable organizations including, the Altar Society of Sacred Heart; Ottawa Junior Wranglers horse riding group; Rambling Ranchers 4-H Club; delivered Meals on Wheels; was a supporter and driver for Franklin County Cancer Foundation; passionate supporter and financial donor to the Franklin County War Memorial; leader and organizer to help create the Ottawa to Richmond section of the Prairie Spirit Rails to Trails; Ransom Memorial Hospital Auxiliary member; supporter of the Republican Party; and anonymously donated to various charitable organizations and individuals. She was a lady of strong faith who led a rich and fulfilling life. She was a loving grandmother and very involved with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They were her greatest joy. On Saturday, January 8, 1955, Ruth was united in marriage with Raymond Ralph Carey in Homewood, Kansas. He preceded her in death on Saturday, October 2, 2010. She is survived by her: Daughter-Sheri Crane and her husband, Rodney, of Ottawa, Kansas; Daughter-Susan Vague and her husband, David, of Ottawa, Kansas; Son-Victor Carey of Michigan Valley, Kansas; Son-Mark Carey and his wife, Jana, of Ottawa, Kansas; Son-Joseph Carey of Rapid City, South Dakota; Sister-Mary McClure of Ottawa, Kansas; Sister-Loyola Hutchison of Scranton, Kansas; Sister-Charlotte Simmons of California; Brother-Claude Turner of Yates Center, Kansas; Grandchildren- (9) Chris Crane, Sabrina Meador, Samantha Carey, Justin Carey, Nick Carey, Andrew Carey, Chris Vague, Megan Vague, Alexa Carey; Great-Grandchildren- (9) Shelby Crane, Clayton Meador, Willie Meador, Charlie Meador, Hannah Carey, Landon Carey, Macie Carey, Tayler Alterman and Ayden Alterman. She was preceded in death by her: Husband-Raymond Ralph Carey; Parents-Raymond Edward and Agatha Eva Turner; Brother-Frank Turner; Brother-Fred Turner; Brother-Orville Turner and Brother-Roland Turner. SERVICES: Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 1, 2012, at Calvary Baptist Church, 925 W. 7th in Ottawa, Kansas. IN STATE: Mrs. Carey will lie in state from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m. Tuesday and 8:30 to 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Dengel & Son Mortuary, where family will meet with friends from 6:30 to 8:30 Tuesday evening.
