Roy Leon Barnes, age 80, of Baldwin City, Kansas died Saturday, April 27, 2013. He was born on August 9, 1932 in Springfield, Missouri, the son of Lonnie and Maudie (Deeds) Barnes. Leon was a resident of Ottawa from 1956 until he retired in 1992. He lived outside of Loveland, Colorado from 1992 to 2001, Punta Gorda, Florida from 2001 to 2005, and then Baldwin City, Kansas from 2005 to 2013. He graduated from Wellsville High School with the class of 1950. On October 7, 1956 Leon was united in marriage with Denise C. Loehrer in Chicago, Illinois. She survives of the home. Leon was a lifelong farmer, farming crops and livestock, retiring in 1992. Leon served in the United States Marine Corp from 1952 to 1956. His first tour of duty was in the Korean War and later served as US Embassy Guard in Switzerland. His decorations and citations included United Nations Service, Korean Service, National Defense Service and Korean PUC Good Conduct Medal. He was a member of the Annunciation Catholic Church in Baldwin City, and founding board member of Franklin County Rural Water District #5. Wednesday, May 1, 2013. IN STATE: A Rosary will be said at Dengel & Son Mortuary, 6:00 P.M. Tuesday, April 30, 2013 followed by a family visitation from 6:30 to 8:00 P.M.
