Roy C. Hawkins

Roy C. Hawkins was born May 20, 1927, at Chillicothe, Missouri. He was the son of James M. and Loey (Rinehart) Hawkins. He lived in Overland Park, Kansas, from 1959 to 1974, moving to Pomona, in Franklin County, Kansas, where he made his home, until his death Monday, March 31, 2003, at the age of seventy-five years. He was co-owner of Hawkins & O'Hara Construction Company for fifteen years, from 1969 to 1984. He also worked for Flett Construction in Kansas City, Missouri, for many years, and was later employed by Wolf Creek Power Plant in Burlington, and Ottawa University, in the maintenance department, retiring in 1989. He served in the United States Air Force from October of 1945 to December of 1948, during World War II, receiving the Army of Occupation Medal and World War II Victory Medal. He was a member and Trustee of Greenwood Baptist Church in Pomona. He served on the Centropolis Township Fire Board and coached youth baseball at 3 & 2 Baseball Park in Overland Park, Kansas. Roy enjoyed the outdoors and was always ready to go hunting and fishing. He appreciated his many friends and enjoyed visiting with them at the Horseshoe Caf' and Franklin County Sale Barn. Roy was very proud of his family and greatly enjoyed his grandchildren. He especially loved watching their ballgames. In 1953, Roy was united in marriage with Norma Zimmer at Kansas City, Kansas. She survives of their home. He is also survived by three sons, Roy A. Hawkins and his wife, Brenda, of Ottawa, Larry D. Hawkins and his wife, Kelley, of Ottawa, Joe Hawkins and his wife, Teresa, of Pomona; daughter, Kelly L. Goracke of Topeka; and, nine grandchildren, J. W. Hawkins, Stacey Hawkins, Lauren Hawkins, Clint Hawkins, Heather Goracke, Evan Hawkins, Katie Hawkins, Drew Goracke, and Spencer Hawkins. He is preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Claude, Howard, John C., and James M. Hawkins; and, two sisters, Velma Davis and Frances Popham. SERVICES: Funeral services will be held from the Dengel & Son Mortuary 10:00 a.m. Thursday, April 3, 2003. OFFICIATING CLERGY: Pastor Bob Miller. IN STATE: Mr. Hawkins will lie in state at the Dengel & Son Mortuary after 1:00 p.m. Wednesday to the service hour, where the family will meet with friends 7 to 8:00 Wednesday evening.
