Rolland Phelon Ferris, Sr. was born June 1, 1917, at Lyndon, Kansas. He was the son of Robert Franklin and Florence (Phelon) Ferris. Rolland lived most of his life in Osage and Franklin Counties in Kansas. He moved into Ottawa, in Franklin County, Kansas in 1990, where he made his home, until his death Monday, January 19, 2004, at the age of eighty-six years. He attended school in Buffalo, Kansas. Rolland was a farmer in the mid 1940's and early 1950's. He worked seventeen years as a welder for Pitman's Manufacturing in Grandview, Missouri, retiring in 1979. During World War II, he was a welder at Boeing Aircraft in Wichita. Mr. Ferris loved being outside, working on his farm and gardening. He also enjoyed fishing and hunting. His greatest love was for his family and grandchildren and spending time together. On March 19, 1936, Rolland was united in marriage with Amy L. Burgess at Lyndon, Kansas. She preceded him in death January 3, 1989. He is also preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Phyllis Ferris; sister, Anna Belle Ferris; brother, Ralph Ferris; and six infant sons. Mr. Ferris is survived by seven sons, Rolland P. Ferris, Jr. and his wife, Shirley, of Pomona, James A. Ferris and his wife, Linda, of Ottawa, William A. Ferris and his wife, Carol, of Shawnee, Marion E. Ferris and his wife, Monica, of Olathe, Robert W. Ferris and his wife, Sandy, of Baldwin City, Dale P. Ferris of Bolivar, Missouri, David R. Ferris and his wife, Dianna, of Bolivar; three daughters, Dorothy A. Evans of Ottawa, Martha L. Ruffier and her husband, Joe, of Kansas City, Missouri, Kay Sypher and her husband, Jeff, of Ottawa; five sisters, Ethel Lewis of Apache Junction, Arizona, Geraldine 'Jerry' Tindel of Topeka, Althea May Jackson of Scranton, Ella Nicolay and her husband, Leonard, of Topeka, Ruth Hilton and her husband, Russ, of Moore, Oklahoma; three brothers, Robert F. Ferris and his wife, Coleen, of Wakarusa, Elbert Henry Ferris of Scranton, Eldon Ray Ferris and his wife, Mary, of Topeka; twenty-five grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. SERVICES: Funeral services will be held from the Dengel & Son Mortuary 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 21, 2004. OFFICIATING CLERGY: Pastor Marion Burgess IN STATE: Mr. Ferris will lie in state after 9:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Dengel & Son Mortuary to the service hour, where the family will meet with friends 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday prior to the service.
