Robert Oran Courter, 75, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2015, at Wellsville Retirement Center in Wellsville, with family by his side. Cremation is planned. Memorial services are set for 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 4, 2016, at Wellsville Baptist Church, Third and Main streets, Wellsville. Family plans to meet with friends immediately following the service. Private inurnment is set for Wellsville Cemetery, Wellsville. Robert was born Feb. 20, 1940, on a farm near Wellsville, Kansas, the son of Wilford and Esther (Davis) Courter. He was a lifelong resident of Wellsville. He attended Rock Creek and Wellsville schools. On June 9, 1957, Robert was united in marriage with Nancy Davidson in Wellsville, Kansas. She preceded him in death Jan. 10, 2014. Other survivors include his three children, Gena Ott and husband Tim of Madison, Kansas, Jeff Courter and wife Cindy of Wellsville, and Leonard Courter and wife Rebanna of Ottawa; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother, Herbert and wife Theresa of Wellsville, Kansas. He was preceded in death by his wife and parents. Robert was a farmer. He enjoyed 4-H and was a member/President of the Happy Go-Getters 4H Club and the Wellsville chapter of the Future Farmers of America. Farming was his occupation, his hobby and his passion. He also helped with the construction of I-35 when it was built, worked with a local family-owned custom harvesting crew combining during harvest and doing carpenter work in the winter. Robert and his wife enjoyed square dancing. He was a member of Wellsville Farm Products in the mid 1970s; owned and operated, with his wife, the Rock Creek Country Meats in Wellsville in the early to mid 1990s. He attended Wellsville Baptist Church. The family suggests memorial contributions to Rock Creek School c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory St., Ottawa, Kansas 66067.
