Robert H. Miller Robert Haskins Miller, 90, of Topeka, Kansas, passed away September 9, 2009, in Topeka, Kansas. He was Chief Justice of the Kansas Supreme Court, when he retired on Sept. 1, 1990. Robert was born, March 3, 1919, in Columbus, Ohio, son of George L. and Alice Haskins Miller. He attended public schools in Columbus and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and graduated from Carrick High School, in 1936. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from The University of Kansas in 1940 and a law degree from The University of Kansas School of Law in 1943. Robert served in the Security and Intelligence division of the army during World War II, and was discharged in 1946. He practiced law in Miami County, either as a sole practitioner or in partnership with Robert I. Nicholson, from 1946 until 1960. He was County Attorney, City Attorney and Attorney for school boards. He was elected in 1960 as Judge of the 6th Judicial District, consisting of Miami, Linn and Bourbon Counties, and served until June, 1969. He was then appointed United States Magistrate by the Judges of the United States District Court, for the District of Kansas, and he served in that capacity for over 6 years. He was appointed a justice of the Kansas Supreme Court by Governor Robert F. Bennett under the non-partisan selection plan in 1975, and took the oath of office as a Justice on November 3, 1975. He became Chief Justice on September 1, 1988. He retired from the Kansas Supreme Court on September 1, 1990. He was on the Kansas District Judges" Pattern Jury Instructions committee, and later served on the Kansas Judicial Council. He served on the Judicial Ethics Advisory Panel and the Kansas Governmental Ethics Commission for over ten years. He was a Rotarian for over 40 years, and was President of the Rotary Clubs of Topeka and Paola. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta and Phi Delta Phi. Robert was also a member of the American Legion for over 60 years, of the Masonic Lodge for over 50 years, and belonged to Arab Shrine, the Shrine Greeters and the Legion of Honor. Robert married Audene Fausett, on March 16, 1943, in Lawrence, Kansas; she servives. Other survivors are sons Stephen F. Miller of Paola, Kansas, Thomas G. Miller, of Shawnee, Kansas, David W. Miller, of Peoria, Illinois; eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. A daughter Stacey Miller Vale, passed away I 1993. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Shiners" Hospitals for Children. Funeral services will be Saturday September 12, at 10:30 AM at the Penwell-Gabel Paola Chapel 305 N.
