Robert Louis Scherman, age 81, of Paola, Kansas passed away January 1, 2019 at his home, surrounded by family. Robert was born on March 31, 1937 to Louis and Mary (Miller) Scherman at Paola, Kansas in his family home. He graduated from Paola High School in 1955 and attended Kansas State University. He was united in marriage to Sharon Arlene Manchester on September 14, 1957 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Robert was a farmer and raised dairy and beef cattle and farmed crops. Robert and Sharon had five children, Joan, Jane, Jean, John Marion, and John Edward. Robert was a lifelong member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Paola and a member of the Knights of Columbus for 63 years. He served with the Kansas Army National Guard. Robert was very active in his community. He served on USD 368 school board for 8 years and was chairman of the board in 1977-78 (during the time a new high school was built). He also served on the county extension board, was a 4-H community leader and project leader for many years. He was a member of the Miami County Fair Board from 1976-1980. Robert was a member of the Miami County Farm Bureau and a local / state Young Farmer and Rancher representative from 1957-1958. Robert received the Master Farmer/Master Farm Homemaker award in 2012. He received the Farm Bureau Family of the year for their district as well as many other awards for farming over the years. Robert hosted Boy and Girl Scouts groups for tours, mentored badge requirements and provided land for the Boy Scouts to use as a camp. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, and son John Marion. He is survived by his wife Sharon of the home; children Joan Scherman of Garden City, KS, Jane Pretz (Steve) of Westwood Hills, KS, Jean Sims of Paola, and John Edward Scherman (Jessica) of Paola; sister Ethel Thompson; grandchildren Luke Pretz, Bridgette Pretz Mattern (Jeffrey), Sarah Pretz, Katarina Pretz Basler (Brett), Blake Sims, Clayton Sims, John Brigham Scherman, Flint Scherman, Briar Scherman; and great granddaughter Lucy Mattern. Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Trinity Catholic School or the Scherman Memorial Fund.
