Robert J. “Bob” Hiatt, 89, of Ottawa, passed away Monday, April 30, 2018, at Ottawa Retirement Village. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Monday, May 7, 2018, at Dengel & Son Mortuary. Family will meet with friends from 4:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M., Sunday, May 6, 2018, at the mortuary. Interment Welda Cemetery, Welda, Kansas, with military honors. Bob was born August 23, 1928, at Garnett, Kansas, the son of John and Stella (Smith) Hiatt. He was a lifelong Franklin County resident living in LeLoup and Princeton. In 1970, Bob moved east of Ottawa to the family farm until moving to Ottawa Retirement Village. He attended school in Williamsburg and graduated from Wellsville High School with the class of 1948. Bob served in the United States Army during the Korean War as a mechanic and truck driver. Bob was united in marriage to Katherine L. “Kathy” Oshel August 10, 1957, at Ottawa. She preceded him in death on September 9, 1993. He was also preceded in death by his parents, John and Stella Hiatt; and five siblings, Rachel Xanthull, Beulah Rotramel, Ruth Davis, Stewart Hiatt, and Joseph Hiatt. Survivors include his three children, Lynn Hiatt and wife Kay of Ottawa, Ronnie Hiatt also of Ottawa, and Linda Jones of Kansas; twin sister, Roberta Pajnic of Ottawa and sister, Martha Bunyard and husband Bob of Kansas City, Missouri; five grandchildren, Nicole, Alan, Dylan, Aaron, and Justin; four step-grandchildren, Kimberly, Emily, Jake and Josh; and great-grandson, Duncan. Bob was a hard-working, lifelong farmer and dairyman. He enjoyed mechanical work on cars, trucks and tractors. On Sunday’s family and friends would gather to visit and enjoy Bob and Kathy’s famous homemade ice cream.
