He graduated from Appanoose High School in 1961, where he excelled in basketball and track. He also had a large collection of miniature cars that were replicas of the original models. Monday and Thursday nights would find Richard watching wrestling on television, rarely if ever missing a single match. Richard also enjoyed kidding with people, both friends and those he'd never met before, always leaving them with a smile on their face. He also enjoyed family get-togethers, which were held several times a year in towns such as Princeton, Garnett, Iola, Topeka and Ottawa. Richard was married in 1961 to Nancy Jane Hamby.
