Richard Allen Filby

October 29, 1946 — January 23, 2005

Richard Allen Filby was born the son of Robert Arthur and Aileen Lucille (Crawford) Filby on October 29, 1946, in Topeka, Kansas. Rick grew up one of four children of a career Army pilot. The family moved around the United States, living in Kansas, Virginia, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, and, also, in the country of Germany. He was residing in Topeka, Kansas, until his death Sunday, January 23, 2005, at the age of fifty-eight years. Rick graduated from Flour Bluff High School, Corpus Christi, Texas, with the class of 1966. He was in the First Calvary Division of the United States Army, serving in Europe and Asia. This was one of the things Rick was most proud of. Rick stayed involved in the V.A. throughout his adult life. He attended and was involved in many parades and meetings, and worked in a V.A. Hospital. He was extremely interested in history, especially military battles, including strategies and locations. Some of Rick's favorite pastimes included completing complicated puzzles and building models, from cars and airplanes, to intricate sailing ships and complete towns. In his quiet time, he enjoyed reading books and writing poetry. Rick loved his family and spending time with them, especially playing with his nieces and nephews while they were children. He was very giving and sharing toward his family and friends. Rick loved, and was loved, very much. Rick was survived by two sisters, Elaine Stout of Villa Ridge, MO; Linda Filby of Collierville, TN, one brother, Charles Filby of St. Louis, MO, three nieces, two nephews; and many friends. Rick was preceded in death by his parents. SERVICES: Funeral services will be held from the Dengel & Son Mortuary, Ottawa, 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 29, 2005.
