Richard Alan Powers, of Ottawa, Kansas, a beloved husband, father, brother, Papa and treasured friend, peacefully passed away on May 27, 2023, at the age of 70. Born on October 28, 1952, in Mexico, Missouri, he was the son of William T. Powers and Vivian Powers.
Rich's memory will be forever cherished by his wife, Terri Powers of Ottawa, who stood by his side throughout their beautiful journey together. He will also be lovingly remembered by his children, Angie Powers and Theron Powers of Olathe and stepchildren, Todd and Mitzi Black of Overland Park and Eric Black of Ottawa. Rich's grandchildren; Enzi and Rowan Hedges as well as Cooper and Taylor Black and Braden, Mackenzie, and Duncan Black; were the light of his life, and he delighted in sharing precious moments with them. Additionally, his legacy will continue through his great-granddaughter, Sophia Black, whose laughter brought immeasurable joy to his heart.
From an early age, Rich understood the value of hard work and dedication. In fourth grade, he began his work journey at the family owned Tastey Freeze. Following his graduation from Great Bend High School, Rich embarked on a series of job ventures, leaving an indelible mark on various industries. Throughout his career, he contributed his skills and expertise to Great Bend Manufacturing, Thies Packing, Rainbow Break, R&R Manufacturing, Service Acid, and Dolly Madison.
In 1987, Rich relocated from Great Bend to Ottawa, Kansas, where he continued to contribute to the local workforce. He held positions at Schwan's, Jackson Ice Cream, Walden & Sons, and Belfonte, leaving a lasting impact on his colleagues.
On July 1, 1995, Rich found his soulmate and life partner in Terri Powers. Their union in marriage in Baldwin, Kansas, marked the beginning of a beautiful chapter in Rich's life. Together, they shared a profound love, friendship, and unwavering support that brought immense happiness and fulfillment.
In 2023, after 23 years of hard work and perseverance, Rich retired from Belfonte as a sales manager, culminating a remarkable career filled with achievements and memorable experiences--leaving his work family with many “Richisms.” Rich's unwavering commitment and passion for his work earned him the respect of colleagues and employers alike.
Rich never met a stranger and would do anything for a friend. He had a knack for storytelling and had so many friends that he never lacked an audience. Rich's entrepreneurial spirit led him to start Richie Rich's BBQ food truck, where he found joy in serving delicious meals to his community. On weekends, he tirelessly catered events, worked at auctions, participated in charity functions, and cooked for family and friends, spreading his passion for food and creating memories. One of his favorite events to cook for was Bo’s Hog Wild, which benefited the children of Franklin and Douglas counties.
In addition to his love for cooking, Rich had a deep appreciation for the outdoors. He found solace in hunting and fishing, and his enthusiasm for BBQ led him to enter numerous cook-offs, where he showcased his unforgettable ribs and chicken.
Rich was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Charlie and Don Powers.
Rich’s surviving siblings are Jimmy Powers (Cindy), Kevin Powers, and Kim Rocha (Donnie). He had many nieces and nephews.
Richard Alan Powers leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and enduring friendships. His vibrant spirit, strong work ethic, and genuine kindness touched the lives of many. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all those fortunate enough to have known him.
A celebration of life will be held at Celebration Hall in Ottawa, KS, on June 16th at from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to be made in Rich's memory to Franklin County Cancer Foundation.
