Raymond E. "Sonny" Coulter

Raymond E. “Sonny” Coulter, 83, of Ottawa, Kansas, passed away peacefully with family by his side on Saturday, December 26, 2020. The family will meet with friends from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 30, 2020, at Dengel & Son Mortuary, Ottawa. Funeral services will immediately follow at 10:00 a.m. Interment Woodlawn Cemetery, Pomona, Kansas. Sonny was born Friday, January 15, 1937, in Denver, Colorado, the son of Ripley Roosevelt “Ted” and Frances Elizabeth (Boroviaka) Coulter. He spent his early years living with his mother. He lived in Ottawa since 1950. He attended Ottawa schools and four years of trade school. On July 15, 1965, Sonny received his certificate of completion of apprenticeship as a carpenter. He built bridges all over Kansas and in neighboring states along with many other jobs throughout the years. Raymond was united in marriage to Jerry L. Stevenson August 11, 1957. They later divorced. He married Rita Scott July 11, 1980. They later divorced. Raymond’s hobbies included going to the VFW for dances, woodworking, tinkering on his 1985 truck, and playing with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed watching and sharing his snacks with the grand dog Rowdy Mack and fighting his prize roosters. Sonny was preceded in death by his parents, Ripley and Frances Coulter, sister, Jennie Scott, half-brother, Larry Sims, and grandson, Ronnie Rentz. He is survived by his four daughters, Jackie Hargett and Joe Brown of Lawrence, Gwen Brecheisen and Kim of Ottawa, Carmen Schroeder of Ottawa, and Jessica Kirkland also of Ottawa; sisters, Lila Crone of Fair Oaks, California, and Janet Salvie and husband Joe of Citrus Heights, California; brother, Robert “Bobby” Coulter and wife Letha of Burlington, Kansas; thirteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren with one on the way; and many nieces and nephews. The family suggests memorial contributions to Crossroads Hospice c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa, KS 66067.
