Ray Owen Reed, 90, of Pomona, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, July 28, 2015, at Ottawa Retirement Village. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, August 4, 2015, at Dengel & Son Mortuary. Family will meet with friends from 7:00 P.M., to 8:00 P.M., Monday, August 3, 2015, at the mortuary. Burial will take place after services at Woodlawn Cemetery, Pomona, with Masonic services. Ray was born Monday, April 6, 1925, in Pomona, Kansas, the son of Ira Elmus and Nellie E. (McLellan) Reed. A lifelong resident and farmer, Ray made his home in Pomona, except for the last two months when he resided in Ottawa. He graduated from Pomona High School with the class of 1943 and stayed connected with much of the class through their 70th reunion. Ray served in the United States Army during WWII from September 1944 to November 1946 as an infantryman in the Pacific Theater, including the Battle of the Philippines. Upon honorable discharge from the Army, he returned to Pomona to farm with his brother. Ray was united in marriage with Arlene Josephine Anderson Reed February 27, 1960. They were married 9 years before her passing in 1969. He married Doris L. Bausch February 10, 1973. They were married 35 years before her passing in 2008. Survivors include his son, Norman Reed and wife Sherry of Pomona; three grandchildren; Jenna Crawford of Overland Park, Owen Reed, and Amy Reed of Pomona; identical twin brother, Roy Elwin Reed of Pomona; many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wives; his parents; and three sisters, Dorothy Reed Hay, Francis Reed Larson, and Jean Reed Bush Laughlin. Ray was a member of Pomona United Methodist Church, Past Master and 50 year member of McKinley Lodge 41 A.F. & A.M., Past Patron and 50 year member of Pomona Chapter 305 Order of Eastern Star, and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He was a past member of the Power of the Past, and the Night Crawlers Camping Club. Ray was known as a collector of antique tractors and gas engines. He and his wife Doris traveled to tractor shows throughout the Midwest and were on the original starting committee for the Power of the Past. Many area residents will recall Ray and Doris making ice cream with their antique gas engines and ice cream freezers at the Power of the Past and other area events. He participated in card clubs with friends and neighbors playing Pitch. Ray was known for his kindness and easy going personality.
