Brownie was a lifelong resident of Pomona, Kansas. He attended school in Pomona, and at Ottawa High with the class of 1945, later earning his GED. Brownie was a livestock, dairy, and crop farmer. In the early 1960`s, he worked for Sunflower Ammunition Plant in DeSoto. In the late 1960`s and early 1970`s, he managed the Williamsburg Lumber Yard. For six years, he was employed by Daniel International as an electrician working at Wolf Creek Power Plant, near Burlington, retiring in 1986. He served in the United States Navy during World War II from October of 1945 to September of 1947, as an Oilerman and Merchant Marine. During the Korean War, he served in the United States Army from July 22, 1954, to April 28, 1956, as a Helicopter Crew Chief. He was a supporter of Greenwood Baptist Church; Past Master of McKinley Lodge #41(Pomona) Ancient Free & Accepted Masons, serving as Secretary twenty-six years; Pomona Chapter #305, Order of the Eastern Star; Past High Priest of Ottawa Chapter #7 York Rite, serving as Past Commander of KYCH; Past Illustrious Master of Ottawa Council #18 York Rite; Past Commander of Tancred Commandary #11 York Rite; Scottish Rite Consistory of Lawrence; member of Knight York Rite Cross of Honor; and Shrine Arabe Temple, Topeka, Kansas. On August 29, 1952, Brownie was united in marriage with Elizabeth Pearl `Beth` Reed at Greenwood, Kansas. She survives of the home. SERVICES: Funeral services will be held from the Dengel & Son Mortuary at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, March 17, 2005. OFFICIATING CLERGY: Pastor Bob Miller. IN STATE: Friends may pay their respects to Mr. Slankard after 5:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Dengel & Son Mortuary until the service hour, where the family will meet with friends 7 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday. CEMETERY: Greenwood Cemetery in Franklin County, Kansas. MEMORIALS: The family suggests memorial contributions to Midland Hospice or Greenwood Baptist Church, c/o Dengel & Son Mortaury, 235 S.
