Phyllis Jo Jones

Phyllis Jo Jones, 77, of Ottawa, Kansas passed away Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at Kansas City Hospice House. Cremation is planned. Memorial services will be held at First Baptist Church, 11:00 A.M., Saturday, January 18, 2014. Family will meet with friends at the church one hour prior to service. Private family inurnment Highland Cemetery, Ottawa. Phyllis was born on Tuesday, July, 14, 1936 in rural Ottawa, the daughter of J. A. “Bud” and LaVerne (Bates) Maxwell. She was a lifelong Franklin County resident. She graduated from Williamsburg High School with the class of 1954. On September 15, 1957 Phyllis was united in marriage with Wayne L. Jones in Ottawa. He survives of their home. Other survivors include her two children, Susan Flory and husband Darrell of Overbrook, and Michael Jones of Frisco, Texas; six grandchildren, Lynsay, Amber, Kimberly, Alyssa, Benjamin and Anna; and sister, Shirley Greenlee and husband David of Mission, Kansas She was preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Treva Larkin. Phyllis was a homemaker. Prior to her marriage she worked in the administrative office for the City of Ottawa, Water and Light Department, and Ottawa Steel. She was a member of First Baptist Church where she worked and organized the Welcome Center and was on the outreach committee. In her younger years she taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School. For many years she volunteered at Garfield Elementary where she assisted with helping students read, was a room mother, and recess supervisor. She was a Girl Scout leader, enjoyed square dancing and being with her family and grandchildren. The family suggests memorial contributions to First Baptist Church c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S.
