Philip H. King, 90, of Pomona, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, September 1, 2015. Celebration of life service will be held at 10:00 A.M., Thursday, September 10, 2015, at Dengel & Son Mortuary. Family will meet with friends from 6:30 P.M. to 7:30 P.M., Wednesday, September 9, 2015, at the mortuary. Inurnment Oak Hill Cemetery, Quenemo, Kansas, with Masonic service and military honors by Ottawa’s Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post 5901. Philip was born Sunday, November 23, 1924, in Quenemo, Kansas, the son of Thomas H. and Lois M. (Hettick) King. He lived in Osage County, Kansas, moving in 1947 to the farm he bought north of Pomona. Philip attended a country school through the ninth grade and graduated from Quenemo High School with the class of 1943. He was drafted in 1943 and served in the United States Navy during World War II in the South Pacific from 1944 until 1946. Philip was united in marriage with Novella Faye Larson August 17, 1947, at Ottawa, Kansas. She survives of their home. Other survivors include his children, Stephen King and wife Nora of Pomona, Joe King and wife Sandra of Pomona, Tomas King and wife Linda of Pomona, and Karla King of Ottawa; five grandchildren, Caleob King and wife Casey, Julie King, Becki Polen and husband Drew, Brandon Clary and Dustin Clary; seven great-grandsons, Noah and Gideon King, Nick Pollot, Conner Clary, Isaiah Messick, Dayne Clary and Brenden Clary; and three great-granddaughters, Brett and Elliot Polen and Rileigh Clary. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Lois King; and sister, Patricia Miller. He was employed by Sunflower Ordinance eight years, Buildex six years, Pomona Lake U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, retiring in 1970. He was also a lifetime farmer and cattleman. He was a member of the Appanoose Baptist Church where he served as Deacon; he also served on the Appanoose Township Board nineteen years, and on the cemetery board, having served as president. He was a member and Past Master of McKinley Lodge No. 41, AF & AM. York Cross of Honor, serving in the Chapter, Council and Commandery and was Past High Priest, Past Illustrious Master and Past Commander of the York Rite Bodies. He also served in the Grand Lodge in the state of Kansas for the order of Red Cross of Constantine, St. Justin Conclave, where he was the Grand Marshall of the Most Illustrious Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons. He was Past Patron of both Pomona Chapter No. 305 and Union Chapter No. 15 Order of Eastern Star. Aerie Lodge No. 309 Fraternal Order of Eagles in Lawrence, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post No. 5901 of Ottawa. Phil’s wishes were to have memorial contributions made to the Masonic Eye Foundation c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa, Kansas 66067.
