Peggy J. Hoopes

Peggy J. Hoopes, 80 of Princeton, passed away Friday, February 1, 2019, at Rock Creek of Ottawa. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, February 5, 2019, at Dengel & Son Mortuary. Family will meet with friends from 6:30 P.M. to 7:30 P.M., Monday, February 4, 2019, at the mortuary. Interment Highland Cemetery, Ottawa. Peggy was born February 9, 1938, in Ottawa, the daughter of Fred and Orelia (Shenk) Mealman. She was a lifelong Franklin County resident. She graduated from Ottawa High School with the class of 1956. Peggy was united in marriage to Gary A. Hoopes July 15, 1961, in Peoria, Kansas. He preceded her in death on March 25, 2015. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Orelia Mealman; three sisters, Genevieve Arb, Kathy Fritts, and Patricia Mealman; and brother, Maynard Mealman. Survivors include her brother, Leo Mealman of Ottawa; sister, Joan James of Ottawa; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews. In 1950, Peggy was employed as a seamstress at Mode-O-Day and H.D. Lee. In the late 1950s to late 1970s, she was an operator at Bell Telephone in Ottawa. Never really retiring, she helped her husband Gary operate an amusement carnival business featuring small rides and games of chance that they personally designed and built. She attended Faith Lutheran Church in Ottawa and was a former member of the Free Methodist Church also of Ottawa. Peggy was very family oriented. She loved little children especially all the nieces and nephews and the time they spent together.
