Patricia Ann “Pat” Smith, 85, of Ottawa, Kansas, passed away Sunday, January 22, 2017, at Ransom Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Thursday, January 26, 2017, at Dengel & Son Mortuary. Family will meet with friends from 6:30 P.M. to 7:30 P.M., Wednesday, January 25, 2017, at the mortuary. Interment Highland Cemetery, Ottawa. Pat was born Monday, March 30, 1931, in Dewey, Oklahoma, the daughter of Frank H. and Ruth G. (Gettinger) Davis. In 1934, Patricia moved with her family to the Ottawa area. She lived in Parsons and Lawrence before returning to Ottawa in 1963. She graduated from Ottawa High School with the class of 1949 and attended Ottawa University and Emporia State, then called Kansas State Teachers College. After teaching at Emery Green rural school for three years, she returned to Kansas State Teachers College and received a bachelor of science in education in 1956. Pat taught second grade at Hillcrest Elementary in Lawrence for four years. Patricia was united in marriage to Orlin Wesley “Pete” Smith July 24, 1960, in Ottawa. He preceded her in death on August 8, 1998. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Ruth Davis; brother, Harold Davis; and sister, Maydell Miller. Survivors include her five children, Phillip Smith and wife Suzan of Pleasant Hill, Missouri, David Smith and wife Nicole of Ottawa, Ronald Smith and wife Lyuda also of Ottawa, Cynthia Jo Smith of Holton, and Patricia Dolan and husband Thomas the III of Topeka; brother, Joe Davis and wife Dorothy of Bethany, Oklahoma; sister, Jean Hahn of Huntington Beach, California; fifteen grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Pat had a love for children and was a foster mom for several years caring for many young children and teenagers. Later, she had a home daycare where she continued loving and caring for children. Pat also loved all of her grandchildren and enjoyed attending their functions. She was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Ottawa. She was a former member of the Four Seasons Garden Club and the Oasis Club. Pat enjoyed her flowers, keeping her yard attractive, eating breakfast on Thursday morning and playing Dominoes Thursday afternoon with church friends. She enjoyed traveling many places in the United States as-well-as internationally. Pat especially enjoyed bus trips to the Dinner Theatre with her friends.
