Otto Heinrich Hammann, age 88 of Overland Park, KS, passed away January 15, 2013. He was born on December 13, 1924 in Lachen/Pfalz, Germany. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gisela Hammann, and is survived by 2 step-daughters, Gabriele Deramus, Stilwell, Kansas, and Charlotte Linhart, Munich, Germany. As an architect and engineer, while living in Germany after the Second World War, he was strategic in the rebuilding of many homes in his hometown of Lachen, Germany. He became a hometown hero. He continued to work in Germany until immigrating to the United States in February of 1957, beginning a new life in America. Otto worked in New York for several years before moving to Vero Beach, Florida, where he eventually met and married his second wife, Gisela, who had two daughters, Charlotte and Gabriele, from her previous marriage. Otto built homes and apartment complexes in Vero Beach, and after his marriage to Gisela, they advanced to building a motel and condominiums. They led a remarkable life filled with extensive travel throughout the United States and Europe while they were able. With age and health problems, it became necessary for Otto and Gisela to move closer to one of her daughters. They moved to Kansas in 2002 where Gabriele lives, and since that time, Gabriele has been a full time caregiver to both her mother, who passed away on August 16, 2011, and Otto. Otto lived a very full and vibrant life, living his life exactly the way he wanted. The family suggests contributions be made to the Kansas City Healing Project.
