Orpha Dell Haney

Orpha Dell (Welton) Haney, 93, of Richmond, Kansas, passed away Sunday, October 12, 2014, at Ottawa Retirement Village. Family will meet with friends from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, October 14, 2014, at Dengel & Son Mortuary. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 15, 2014, at Ruhamah Baptist Church. Interment Ruhamah Cemetery, Rantoul, Kansas. Orpha Dell was born Tuesday, February 1, 1921, in Franklin County, Kansas, the daughter of Willis William and Mae Elvira(Gladding) Welton. She was a lifelong Franklin County resident. She graduated from Rantoul High School with the class of 1938 and continued her education at Ottawa University receiving her teaching certificate. Orpha Dell was united in marriage with Ralph Lloyd Haney July 15, 1945, in Princeton, Kansas. He preceded her in death on December 17, 1997. She was also preceded in death by her parents; and siblings, Eula Montgomery, Homer Welton, Lyle Welton, Eunice Cline, Lola Beth Welton, Marvin Welton, Bruce Welton, Agnes Welton and Verna Bishop; son-in-law, Todd Thurston; and grandson, Nathaniel Haney. Survivors include her children, Paul Haney and wife Dianne of Richmond, and Diane Thurston of Overland Park; sister, Vada Cartmill and husband Max of Ottawa; brother, Dwight Welton of Lawrence; five grandchildren, David Haney and wife Bridget of Kansas City, Missouri, Joshua Haney and wife Sarah of Princeton, Jamie Powell and husband Jordan of Richmond, Travis Thurston of Overland Park, and Trent Thurston of Hutchinson; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Orpha Dell taught at Cole and Hood schools and completed her teaching at Martin School in Princeton. She was a long time member of Ruhamah Baptist Church.
