Norman "Lee" Shaffer age 85, of Garnett, KS, passed away March 12, 2015 at St. Frances Hospital, Topeka, KS. Lee was born in Sarcoxie, Missouri August 23, 1929. He was the third child of four, born to Ben and Ella Mae (Daffron) Shaffer. Lee was active in sports and graduated from Sarcoxie High School in 1947. He worked at various jobs, including Sarcoxie Hardware until he was drafted into the United States Army and went to basic training in 1951 at Camp Chaffee (AR). He served proudly in the Army during the Korean War until his Honorable Discharge in 1955. He always took pride in his military service to his country. Although, he vowed he would never get on another ship again after his 30 day trip by sea to and from Korea. After returning from Korea he enrolled at Southwest Missouri State in Springfield, then to Joplin Junior College, playing football at both schools. After Joplin, he transferred to Pittsburg State University. One of his regrets was turning down the opportunity to play football at Pitt State. He forever loved and followed Gorilla football. While at Pitt State he met the future mother of his children Joyce Padfield. They were married for 36 years. He graduated with Bachelor"s degree in education and earned his Master"s degree from Pitt State. Their 30 plus years of marriage produced four sons, Brent, Kirk, Thad and Chad. His teaching and coaching career covered many different subjects and districts including Lockwood, Richards (MO), Oak Grove, in the Turner district, Chanute and eventually two different stints at Louisburg. He took pride in his strict and disciplined classroom. In between his teaching time in Louisburg he worked at Kansas City Structural Steel and had a successful cleaning business. After retiring in 1994 Lee (grandpa) spent many hours and miles watching/chauffeuring his granddaughters to various sports and activities. His granddaughters brought out a totally different side of Grandpa Lee. He left Louisburg and moved to Garnett in 1996, where he lived the rest of his life. He is survived by his four sons, Brent and Teresa Kiowa, KS; Kirk and Stacie Louisburg, KS, Thad Louisburg, KS and Chad Kansas City, MO. Five Granddaughters: Maurissa, Alexis, Idallis (Brent and Teresa), Paige and Peyton (Kirk and Stacie), sister, Grace Larsen of Fort Scott and a brother Glenn Shaffer of Neosho, MO. In Lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to the American Legion Post 250, or to the VFW Post 7348.
