Norma J. Sprigg of Paola passed away May 25th at the KU Medical Center. Norma Jean Coen Sprigg was born December 9, 1927, to Oscar and Katherine Coen at home in Kansas City, MO. The family later lived in Silverlake, KS, St. Louis, MO, then returned to Kansas City, MO. She graduated from Central High School in 1944. During World War II years, she served in the Civilian Air Defense effort, having lied about her age to join. The age requirement was 16; she was only 15 at the time. In 1946, she married Richard Allen Sprigg on September 6 in a small ceremony in her parent’s home. They honeymooned in the Ozarks. By 1956, they settled in Paola, KS where they built their own home on Crestview Drive. For many years, Norma worked at Sprigg Rent-all. She served as president of the local PTO, taught summer Bible school classes at the United Methodist church, and later delivered Meals on Wheels. In keeping with her interest in airplanes, she earned her pilot’s license and became active in the Miami Airport Association, serving as secretary and president. She was widowed in 1983 after 37 years of marriage. She is preceded in passing by two sisters: Virginia L. Griffin of Burlington, NC and Wanda Hobart of Crestview, FL. She is mother of two daughters: Linda Sprigg Madl, North Fort Myers, FL and Lisa Louise Boehm, Paola, KS and had three grandchildren, Lori Ann Madl, Dustin Boehm, and Mitchell Boehm.
