Nina C. Smith, age 87, of Ottawa, Kansas, died Sunday, October 23, 2011, at Ottawa Retirement Village in Ottawa, Kansas. She was born on Thursday, August 21, 1924, in Ottawa, the daughter of John Wesley and Laura Emma (Hazen) Striplin. Nina was a lifelong Ottawa resident. She attended Ottawa schools. Nina was a homemaker. Nina was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post #5901 Auxiliary and Aerie Lodge #2700, Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary, both of Ottawa. Nina enjoyed sewing, quilting, making potholders and stuffed toys. She loved caring for her flower gardens. On June 26, 1941, Nina was united in marriage with Harry LeRoy Smith in Ottawa. He preceded her in death October 8, 1988. Nina is survived by her: Daughter-Nina Fisher and her husband, Lawrence, of Ottawa, Kansas Daughter-Deanna Cunningham and her husband, Walter, of Pomona, Kansas Grandchildren-Twelve Gt.Grandchildren-Twenty-three Gt.Gt.Grandchildren-Six She was preceded in death by her: Parents-John Wesley and Laura Emma Striplin Husband-Harry LeRoy Smith Daughter-Donna J. IN STATE: Mrs. Smith will lie in state after 4:00 p.m. Wednesday until the service hour at the Dengel & Son Mortuary, where the family will meet with friends from 7:00 to 8:00 Wednesday evening.
