Nellie Marie Miller was born December 31, 1924, near Richmond, Kansas. She was the daughter of Eli and Mae (Alexander) Brockus. For many years, Nellie lived in Rantoul, moving to Ottawa, in Franklin County, Kansas, in 1970, where she made her home until her death Sunday, September 15, 2002, at the age of seventy-seven years. She attended rural schools in the Martin School District. Her family moved once but were still in that district, so she finished all eight grades there. She didn't have the opportunity to go to high school, so she took a job working for a family near Fontana, Kansas, caring for this family with three children whose mother was ill. Nellie was a lifelong homemaker. She served as city treasurer several years and also on the high school board. She hung a little wallpaper, and finally, over the years, hung lots of paper in and around Rantoul. She was a member and Elder of Rantoul Community Presbyterian Church. She was very dedicated to her church and enjoyed all their activities. She enjoyed sewing, cross-stitching, and quilting. She belonged to the church quilting group and attended ladies aid meetings. Nellie was very giving to her friends and loved visiting with them and spending time with her family and grandchildren. On March 27, 1940, Nellie was united in marriage with Ernest Alva Miller at Ottawa, Kansas. He preceded her in death on November 2, 1994. She is also preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Clifford Brockus, Eldon Brockus, Thomas Brockus; sister, Martha Heckman; and, three infant grandchildren. She is survived by her son, Donald Miller and his wife, Patricia, of Ottawa; daughter, Carolyn Turley and her husband, Franklin, of Baldwin; three grandsons, Rocky Turley, Tony Miller, Rob Miller; three granddaughters, Teresa Meyerkorth, Melody Chapman, Tracy Englund; four great-granddaughters, Tara Boswell, Regan Boswell, Sara Meyerkorth, Jenna Meyerkorth; three great-grandsons, Mikael Englund, Brandon Englund, Lucas Chapman; and, one great-great-grandson, Colby McCurdy.
