Nellie Fern Logan

September 2, 1910 — September 9, 2002

Nellie Fern Logan was born September 2, 1910, at Richmond, Kansas. She was the daughter of Charles Richard and Gertrude (Strider) Wemmer. In the late 1950`s, Nellie moved to Ottawa, in Franklin County, from the Homewood area, where she made her home until her death Monday, September 9, 2002, at the age of ninety-two years. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and the Progressive Home Extension Unit, both of Ottawa. On November 2, 1933, Nellie was united in marriage with Harold Logan in Franklin County, Kansas. They enjoyed thirty-six years of marriage before his death December 5, 1969. Mrs. Logan helped her husband on their farm in rural Richmond. She especially enjoyed raising baby chicks each spring. She candled eggs for sale and butchered and dressed her own chickens, which were usually shared with family members and friends. She and her husband raised and bred cattle and pigs, as well as a number of crops. She was also skilled with all the farm equipment and would help in the fields, as needed. She had fruit trees, strawberries and a vegetable garden. Mrs. Logan was an excellent cook and served meals for farm hands who helped with crops each summer. She was also a seamstress who made most of her own clothing in the home. Mr. and Mrs. Logan sold their farm and moved to Ottawa in the late 1950's. After the death of her husband, she invited her sister, Viola Ferns, and late brother-in-law, Joe Ferns, to live with her in her home at 1504 South Oak Street. She was loved and respected by many and will be greatly missed by her family and friends as she begins her next journey. Mrs. Logan is survived by her sister, Viola R. Ferns of Ottawa; nephew, Louis Ferns of Fort Worth, Texas; three nieces, Hilda Miller of Richmond, Bonnie Ferns of Ottawa, Jo Ellen Hall and her husband, J. B., of Ottawa; a number of great nieces and nephews, as well as great-great nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; sister, Verna M. Logan on April 13, 1988; two nephews, Leo F. Logan on December 20, 1989, and Norman Logan in January of 1959. SERVICES: Funeral services will be held from the Dengel & Son Mortuary 10:00 a.m. Thursday, September 12, 2002. OFFICIANT: Rev.
