Muriel Mischke, age 94, passed away August 10, 2012 at the John Knox Village Hospice House in Lees Summit, MO. Memorial contributions may be made to the Paola Free Library Foundation or John Knox Village Hospice. Muriel was born Juanita Muriel Stephens on June 22, 1918 in Hillsdale KS, to William and Effie May Richardson Stephens. She was the fourth of fourteen children. She grew up in the area and was united in marriage on June 27, 1937 to Dorman Craven. He passed away in 1969. In November of 1971, she was united in marriage to Richard Mischke who passed away in 1972. Muriel operated Muriel"s Beauty Shop in Hillsdale from 1957 to 1971. She later was employed at Osawatomie State Hospital as a telephone operator, retiring in 1983. Muriel continued to volunteer and worked at Paola Free Library until the age of 80, when she moved to John Knox Village in Lees Summit. Muriel attended Baptist Churches all of her life and enjoyed her pet dachshund dog Prissy and spending time with family. She also enjoyed baking pies, reading the KC Star, and watching soap operas. She will be dearly missed by family and friends. Preceding Muriel in death were her parents, two husbands, seven brothers and two sisters. Surviving are her two children, Judith Christian and husband Bob of Livingston, TX, and Theodore Phillip Craven and wife Joyce of Platte City MO; 6 grand children; 6 great grandchildren; sisters Mildred Blackburn of Warsaw MO, and Velma Seuferling of Cameron, MO; brothers Charles Stephens and Don Stephens, both of Gardner, KS.
