He was a lifelong Ottawa resident. Doug graduated from Ottawa High School with the class of 1968. Following high school, he attended Ottawa University and Kansas University. Later, he received his E.M.T. Certification from Neosho County Community College. He was a Captain of Security for Wacken Hut, of Kansas City, Missouri, retiring in 2003. He also taught safety classes for Wacken Hut. Doug served in the United States Army from October 25, 1974, to February 28, 1979, attaining the rank of E-5. He served his country during the Vietnam War. Following his years of active duty he served in the Army National Guard for 14 years. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church of Ottawa and played in the New Song Choir. He also earned a certification from the American Red Cross to be a First Aid Instructor. Doug was a lifelong Musician and avid music lover. He played in several bands and was recorded with one of his bands in Germany. Music was not his only performing forte. He was in several plays while in Ottawa and while attending Kansas University. He was also a published writer and currently working on several books. He had a love for animals and enjoyed fishing and hunting. Most important to Doug was his family, all of whom he loved and adored. On June 13, 1987, Doug was united in marriage with Florine Waterbury at Faith Lutheran Church in Ottawa. She survives of their home. SERVICES: Memorial services will be held from Faith Lutheran Church at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 25, 2006. IN STATE: Mr. Durbin has donated his body to science.
