Mildred L. Heathman, 90, of Ottawa, passed away Thursday, November 15, 2018, at Ottawa Retirement Village. The family will meet with friends from 6:30 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., Tuesday, November 20, 2018, at Dengel & Son Mortuary. Cremation is planned. Mildred was born October 10, 1928, in Pomona, Kansas, the daughter of Raymond and Gladis (Carol) Bitts. She grew up in Pomona, living in Neodesha and Topeka. In 1951, Mildred moved to Ottawa. She graduated from Pomona High School with the class of 1946. Mildred continued her education at Kansas State University graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Education, specializing in Home Economics. Mildred was united in marriage to Frederick Heathman June 15, 1952, in Ottawa. He preceded her in death on February 3, 2006. She was also preceded in death by her parents; brother, Warren Bitts; and nephew, Bob Patton. Survivors include her two sons, Brad Heathman and wife Barbara of Ottawa and Bill Heathman of Cascade, Idaho; two grandchildren, Matt Heathman of Phoenix, Arizona and April Heathman of Boulder, Colorado; nieces and nephews, Jeannette Jury of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Barbara Zillner of Warsaw, Missouri, Dan Jury of Ulysses, Kansas, Cecil Heathman of Arizona, Janice Enterkin of Sedgwick, Kansas, and Don Bitts of Twentynine Palms, California; and cousin, Larry Bitts of Chanute. Mildred was a devoted homemaker and a substitute teacher in Neodesha, Topeka and Ottawa in the middle school and high schools in the late 1960s. She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church and the Clovia Sorority at KSU. Mildred enjoyed sewing, beading and many other crafts. She also played Bridge and liked to play card and board games. Mildred’s greatest joy was spending time with her family and grandchildren.
