Mildred Jeanette Barber

Mildred Jeanette Barber was born December 27, 1920, at Ottawa, in Franklin County, Kansas. She was the daughter of Carl E. and Elizabeth (Strider) Bennett. Mildred lived in Quenemo from 1930 to 1939, returning to Ottawa for four years before moving to Salina in 1943. In 1947, she returned to Ottawa, where she made her home until her death Wednesday, June 5, 2002, at the age of eighty-one years. She attended Ottawa schools and earned a General Education Diploma in 1979. Mildred worked for several Ottawa restaurants until 1943. She was employed by Southwestern Bell from 1943 until her retirement August 1, 1979. She later worked as an evening receptionist at Dengel & Son Mortuary from March 1, 1983, until November 30, 1997. She was a life member of Telephone Pioneers of America and AFL-CIO Labor Union, served as past treasurer and president of Ottawa Bowling Association, member and past president of Christian Women`s Fellowship and Wifani Sunday School Class of First Christian Church, also serving as past financial secretary, treasurer and as an Elder of the church. Mildred was outgoing and extremely caring. She would go out of her way to help others. She loved spending time with her family and visiting with her many friends. In 1938, Mildred was united in marriage with Clifford T. Yockey. On December 19, 1941, she was united in marriage with Sidney L. Barber at Peoria, Kansas. He preceded her in death January 28, 1981. She is also preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Denise Leann Barber; two sisters, Wilma Hay, Virginia Perry; and, brother, Harold E. Bennett. She is survived by her son, Bruce Moses and his wife, Jan, of Pomona; two daughters, Devra R. Coiner and her husband, Jim, of Gardner, Delorah S. Barber of Ottawa; three sisters, Freda (Peggy) Williamson of Olathe, Eula Scott of Pomona, Mary Burgess of Topeka; brother, Willard T. Bennett of Hutchinson; nine grandchildren, Sabra Moses, Jerry Moses, Tal Moses, Jena Pyle, Jimmy Coiner, Kelli Clary, Kodi Crane, Erin Crane, T. J. Barber; and, sixteen great-grandchildren. SERVICES: Funeral services will be held from Dengel & Son Mortuary 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 7, 2002. OFFICIANT: Rev. Greg Cheatham. IN STATE: Mrs. Barber will lie in state after 5:00 p.m. Thursday at Dengel & Son Mortuary to the service hour. CEMETERY: Highland Cemetery, Ottawa, Kansas.
